In December, Russia’s most renownedcontemporary painter and People’s Artist of theRussian Federation, Nikas Safronov, will presenthis work in India for the first time with thesupport of Rosneft Oil Company.
His inauguralexhibition will be held in New Delhi from December7 to 21, followed by a show in Mumbai fromDecember 25 to January 15. These exhibitions willmark the beginning of a major internationalproject, Safronov said in an interview with theleading Russian business dailyVedomosti.
According to the artist, participation in such cultural initiativesfulfills a charge from Pope Francis, who, shortlybefore his death in February 2025, blessedSafronov to "build spiritual bridges - in theVatican, across Europe, and around theworld."
"Culture unites people bestbecause it speaks a language everyone understands- the language of positive emotion. I am glad tohave become part of these important and benevolentinitiatives supported by Rosneft OilCompany," the painter emphasized.
Safronovis preparing 96 works for the exhibitions, workingon them daily. Ten of these were createdspecifically for India. As is his custom whenpreparing exhibitions abroad, Safronov immersedhimself in the country’s history, culture, painting, and epics.
"In this case Istudied depictions of Shiva and Brahma, the TajMahal, Varanasi, the natural environment, architecture, and certain iconic sites. To capturethe atmosphere, I carefully examined Roerich’spaintings to see India and Tibet once more throughhis eyes," he said.
Safronov works in hisown style, which he calls "DreamVision."
"It’s like the dream you seejust before waking. When you awaken, you rememberit for about fifteen minutes. The last impressions- half-blurred, already fading - transfer to thecanvas. It’s a visit to misty Venice, Pompeii withits blurred frescoes, or a foggy morning in aRussian forest. It is a complex technique, but itis rooted in professionalism - in knowledge ofperspective, draftsmanship, and color," theartist explained.
"I hope the exhibitionwill be a success and attract a wide range ofvisitors - local residents, the creativeintelligentsia, schoolchildren, andbusinesspeople. We will hold meetings and masterclasses there and interact with students,"Safronov noted.
He added that the Indiaexhibitions are the launch of his largeinternational project. With Rosneft Oil Company’ssupport, the shows will include 15 distinct zones, multimedia projections, LED and volumetricscreens, cutting-edge technologies usingneuro-mirrors, living paintings, and targetedaccent lighting.
"It will be beautiful andimpressive," the artist assured. He addedthat "live art combined with VR and ARtechnologies is already not the future - it is ourpresent." At the same time, Safronov isconfident that artificial intelligence cannotreplace a true artist.
"Artificialintelligence can offer suggestions, but it cannotdo the work for you. Nor can it invent somethingradically new in art - after all, it is analgorithm that operates according to a templateset by humans and uses information fed intoit," Nikas Safronov stressed.
